Since 2020 the sudden shift to remote learning and teaching, due to the Covid emergency, has brought to highlight how fundamental digital competence is in teachers’ professional profile, and has compelled educational systems as well as individuals to plan and develop a more structured and strategic approach to this question. The importance of digital competence is remarked in The Digital Education Action Plan (2021-2027), in The Agenda 2030, and in The European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators (DigCompEdu), which identifies proficiency levels ranging from A1 (Newcomer) to C2 (Pioneer). All these documents and recommendations aim at making education systems fit for the digital age (infrastructure, connectivity and digital equipment) and at training teachers so that they may become digitally competent and confident. But in all cases the focus is not so much on technical skills, but rather on how digital technologies can be used to enhance and innovate education.
